Dust and Echoes

Just... dust and echoes. We are all that's left.

...We did what we had to do.

- Cortana, ending of Halo: Combat Evolved

Finally, some recreational art! This piece was inspired by Halo, one of my all-time favorite video game series. Combining this with a love for Invader Zim creates interesting results that are Sci-Fi centric with dark undertones.

This was a rushed painting, as part of an effort to improve my methods. My goal is to create eye-catching scenes that are quick to render, yet convincing in a whole. Critique is encouraged, as it is my best method of learning how to improve on future work. Speed and efficiency are important keys to good concept art, so tips on improving both are appreciated.

I've stepped away from the sticker-like appearances of characters and include them into my flow of painting like any other element. They are no longer painted separately, but rather treated as part of the entire image. I want to portray a concept with the aid of the characters, not the other way around.

I can point out several things that displease me, such as the lack of important detail in certain areas. I feel as though I could have done much better on the clouds, as they aren't very convincing to me. It is a difficult balance to keep the eye entertained but not overwhelmed with detail. I also ran into some trouble with Gaz, primarily her hair. She is a bit confusing to work with in a 3-dimensional space, but this will grow better as I become more familiarized with her shape. I believe this is the third time I've ever drawn her out, and the very first time I've drawn Robot Gir.

I was able to achieve some pretty decent depth that my previous work lacked. This can be spotted on the placement of Zim, where I emphasized size difference through detail in the trail. The lack of contrast further sent him into the distance, making shadows take on the color of the atmosphere. This is something I struggled with for a while before, where characters looked small rather than far away. I feel that although there is much more to be done, I have tackled this issue.

Technical stuff aside, I hope you like it! Let me know what you think.
